TLT Aptitude Tests

Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal

Like many other law firms, TLT makes use of the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal to evaluate the logical reasoning and critical thinking capabilities of potential legal students.

The test lasts for 30 minutes, and has 40 questions split over five different sections:

  1. Inference (5 questions)
  2. Recognition of Assumptions (12 questions)
  3. Deduction (5 questions)
  4. Interpretation (6 questions)
  5. Evaluation of Arguments (12 questions)

The Watson Glaser Critical Thinking test is recognized as being a challenging test, and it is worth preparing and practicing beforehand so that you know what to expect.

Situational Judgement Test

In the situational judgment test, you are presented with work-based scenarios that mimic the type of situations that you might encounter in the role you have applied for. You are tasked to decide which of the presented solutions would be the best course of action to solve the problem, and this shows the recruitment team what your behavior at work is like, the type of person that you are, and how you approach problems.

Numerical Reasoning Test

Although the numerical reasoning test uses mathematical knowledge, it is not a math test. You will only need to know the basic math skills that you have learned in school, and you'll have to apply them to unfamiliar data to make a reasoned decision.

In the numerical reasoning tests, questions are presented as data in the form of tables and graphs, and you will have to perform basic mathematical operations to find the right answer from the multiple-choice options presented.

Verbal Reasoning Test

Verbal reasoning is about your ability to make decisions based on written information, and you will have to be able to read, understand, and analyze a passage of text to answer the multiple-choice questions.

In the test, you will have a passage of text, with a question or statement that follows. You will either have to decide if the statement is true, false, or if there isn't enough information to tell, or you might have to complete a sentence with a missing word.

Full-Day Assessment Center

The final stage of the application process is the application center, which takes place over a full day and includes several different assessment activities.

Group Exercise

In this exercise, you will be placed into a small group, and each member will be given information about a case study. The group will need to work together to come up with a solution to the given problem, and everyone needs to be able to have a say as this exercise is designed to introduce conflict due to different information being given to each member. As a group, you need to come to a decision and share it with the assessor, and answer questions about it.

Presentation

Before the assessment center, you will be given a topic to research so that you can deliver a short presentation. This presentation might be based on something relevant to the industry, or you might be able to choose something yourself. After you have delivered the presentation, the assessor will ask you questions about it, so you want to make sure that you know the subject matter inside and out.

Psychometric Testing

If you did not complete online testing (as mentioned above) before the Assessment Center, then you will be completing it now.

Strengths-Based Interview

The final stage is a strengths-based interview, which involves questions relating to your potential and your strengths (or weaknesses).

The assessor will ask you to describe events or issues from your past where you had to use a specific skill or attribute, to see how you prefer to work and the way you interact with others. This is all about innate soft skills like communication and teamwork that are integral to the values of TLT.
